Appreciate any help you all can provide. I tried a search and several folks say it’s possible to code out the airbag light on the 981 when installing aftermarket seats, but as far as I can find no one has posted the actual step by step!
The options are definitely different from 987, and I’ve heard something about selecting a different seat, or re-calibrating, and/or recoding before removing the old seat… What’s the truth?
If you have the instructions, would appreciate a share!
Specifically:
– How to code out passenger occupancy sensor/AWS
– How to code out Airbag light for the thorax/knee bags from the old seats
– How to code out seat belt light and chime.
I can contribute to one of these items at least:
– To code out the seat belt light and chime, load up PIWIS, select all your control units, then go to Coding -> Customer Specific Settings -> Disable audio seat belt warning and visual seat belt warning.
DISCLAIMER: Disabling factory safety equipment can be dangerous and may not be legal where you live. Restore factory equipment and all settings before selling a vehicle.
Note especially that with an aftermarket seat there is no passenger weight sensor – so an aftermarket passenger seat is no longer safe for young children.
Here’s the solution!
1. Switch PIWIS to developer mode: How to Switch Piwis 2 Sotware to Piwis 2 Developer Mode – Piwis Tester2
* Warning, you will now be proceeding in German.
2. Once back at the PIWIS main menu, go to Diagnostics -> Your model
3. Then select the Airbag control unit.
4. Then select ‘Codierung Anpassungen’
5. From here, select both of the Airbag coding categories and hit next.
6. On the next screen will be a very long list of coding options in German, here are the ones you want:
7. Coding Value: Kodierbyte 1 – Zundkreiskodierung 1 Knieairbag Fahrerseite – DKBAG –> ein
– Coding Value: Kodierbyte 1 – Zundkreiskodierung 1 Knieairbag Fahrerseite – DPKBAG –> ein

– Then save your changes, turn off the car – and turn it on again and your airbag warning light should be gone!
Reminder: if you need to disable your seatbelt light/chime – you do not have to be in developer mode, you can just:
– Start PIWIS and select your control units
– Select ‘Coding and Adaptations’
– Select ‘Customer Specific Settings’
– Turn off the audible seat belt warning
– Turn off the visual seat belt warning
